The night starts with an NM lecture program featuring two projects by members of the New Models community: political scientist KEVIN MUNGER shares analysis and research materials from his NM working group on Vilém Flusser’s COMMUNICOLOGY: Mutations in Human Relations, the philosopher’s foundational 1978 text on the evolution of human communication, which was finally published in English this year. Expect deep historical context for the logic of the internet and how our imagination has fundamentally changed with the transition to “technical images” from linear text, and before it, images as our primary way of transferring information. In addition, the COLLAPSOLOGY collective (incubated in the NM Discord) launches a zine and card game exploring the implications of climate collapse from both systemic and individual perspectives. Meanwhile, NM hosts LIL INTERNET & CAROLINE BUSTA will offer insights and lessons learned over five years of tumultuous technological, ideological, and societal change.
Following the lectures, artist, composer, and librettist RICHARD KENNEDY offers a rare Berlin performance with their debut of We Meta at the mall. “If money is energy and time is value,” Kennedy writes, teasing language from this new solo work, “what is on the frontier of our collective soul? In a post-cool age of the individual as brand, the spirit world emerges as the new West… What is this gold we rush towards? Is it for fools or hyper cools?” Kennedy also premiered their 2020 opera Fubu Fukú with NM at Trauma.
Marking this 5th anniversary for New Models and the closing of Trauma Bar und Kino’s 2023 summer season, an afterparty will feature DJ friends and members of the NM Expanded Universe, including LIL INTERNET b2b a very special SECRET GUEST and Trauma’s own dj music. Finally, hardcore angel PAX takes us to heaven. Five years down, with only eternity left to go.
