Science of Signs Methodology

In the workshop, we will share our artistic practice which is devoted to a physical exploration that is in constant correspondence with philosophical and spiritual teachings.

Lead by Gal Naor & Matan Zamir | Photo by Bobby Collins

How is it possible to know experience and how come experience is known? What is there between our thoughts? What are the qualities of our conscious experience and how can we apply those qualities to the moving body?

Individually and as a group, we will investigate the borders between knowing and not knowing, states of awareness, abstraction and intention, stillness and physical activity to expand the way we perceive our body-minds. We will allow ourselves to gradually return to our natural, organic state of sensitive openness. As a result, we learn to feel and move our bodies in a way that is consistent with our new understandings and embody those understandings in our practice through improvisations and mental/physical explorations.

Science of Signs Methodology Workshop is an inclusive space welcoming mixable artists, dancers, actors, musicians and people with and without experience in performing arts. We open the door to those who wish to deepen the connection to their body and creative mind. The workshop can be accessible to the Deaf by simultaneous Sign-Language interpretation.

In a mindful laboratory, a sign language interpreter operates a mystery: What is the language above all languages and what universal messages are echoing through it?

Lights & Vessels is the first chapter in the progressive wave’s performance trilogy Science of Signs. This narrated solo piece aims to uncover a thought provoking outlook on the teachings of Kabbalah wisdom, suggesting an up to date interpretation of the sacred tongue.

A scientific solo piece about the metaphysics of love.

In celebration of the rising international queer icon MIKEY.’s recent release of their acclaimed EP ‘PATHS’, we are ready to present a trans-sensory performance concert infused by the uncharted cosmos of genderless love. Come early to step into a hypnotic audiovisual sphere intertwined with retrospective artefacts. Settle down for a one-night-only show by MIKEY. featuring an enchanting cast of performers. Stay late and explore the infinite paths unfolding around and within us constantly. This might happen to be the transformative night that your consciousness didn’t know your senses and desires were longing for all along.

Mikey started out as a solo acoustic act in Australia. After leaving Australia, MIKEY spent time in New York and London where they encountered a community of queer nightlife creatures who awakened the courage for self-discovery that has since become a central theme of their music. In addition to their music sets, MIKEY began performing with Sink the Pink, creating unique looks that led to a design commission from Rihanna and multiple appearances in music videos and fashion magazines. Later, the house music duo Basement Jaxx took notice of MIKEY’s vocals, inviting them into the studio for the collaboration “Walk the Dog”. And just recently Mikey was featured in a film for Depeche Mode’s Global Spirit Tour, directed by Anton Corbijn.

EL CIRCULO ETERNO [Homage to Harald Kreutzberg]

Understanding the essence of the past means to take a look into the future.

Choreographed by Norbert Servos / Jorge Morro | Dancers: Silvia Ventura and Jorge Morro | Music: Max Richter a.o. | Set and costumes: Norbert Servos/Jorge Morro | Lighting design: Norbert Servos / Asier Solana | Video editing: Norbert Servos | A piece by DanceLab Berlin in co-production with Centro Danza Canal and Mime Centrum Berlin. | Presented by Trauma Bar und Kino

El Circulo Eterno is a dialogue between the past and the present; a dialogue between two performers who constantly oscillate between gender roles. This is how DanceLab Berlin is giving honor to one of the most significant protagonists of German Expressionist Dance - Harald Kreutzberg [1902-1968]. Not only was he described as »the best dancer since Nijinsky« by the New York Times in 1927, but more importantly, Kreutzberg was a pioneering queer artist who played a very delicate game in his exploration of androgyny and homosexuality under the Third Reich.

»Dealing with gender is at the focus of our creation. From the very beginning it was not our aim to reconstruct Kreutzberg but to use his great inventions as a source of inspiration for a new creation of contemporary dance. We started to isolate certain hand and arm gestures from Kreutzberg's ballet solo Der ewige Kreis from 1938 and combined them with our contemporary styles, developing a new type of language.«

DanceLab Berlin is a dance company with two artistic directors and choreographers: Jorge Morro and Norbert Servos. The company was founded at Akademie der Künste in 1993 as a platform for a variety of dancers, actors, singers, composers and visual artists from all over the world. Since then DanceLab Berlin has produced and presented its interdisciplinary creations in countries like The Netherlands, Spain, Luxembourg, Cuba and Greece.

Both dates the show will be starting at 20.00.

The Summoning of Groovin’ Gary

Starring Groovin’ Gary, Crispin Glover, Trent Harris and Sean Penn with supporting artwork from Constant Dullaart and Jesper Just

Trent Harris, The Beaver Kid, 1979 | Trent Harris, The Beaver Kid II, 1981 | Trent Harris, The Orkly Kid, 1985 | Jesper Just, Bliss and Heaven, 2005 | Constant Dullaart, Keep Me Waiting, 2013

Traumabarundkino is pleased to inaugurate its program of artist films with Trent Harris’s masterpiece “The Beaver Trilogy”. This film remains one of the most important and yet underrecognized hallmarks of recursive filmmaking. Seen for the first time together simultaneously, the films explore queering through a complex echo, a transcendental karaoke that reverberates across each case study. Gary’s sacred rite becomes a cinematic energy frequency. Works by artists Constant Dullaart and Jesper Just each reference the reference of the reference, rippling and metabolizing Trent’s film into a cultural ritual.

Raze de Soare & Rozzma live + Charlotte Bendiks & Utopus dj sets

Two intriguing live shows from Bucharest and Cairo, followed by an early afterparty

"Raze de Soare bears all the signifiers of Future Nuggets' trademark “maneletronics” – taking cues from the bustling but traditional Romanian lăutărească - the Oriental motifs, the nostalgia and longing, mixed with 20th century electronics, a sort of psychedelic 70ties or 80ties chilled sound, starting off with dope bass and squeaky synth sounds. It could be made in the retromania of present day, as well as dug out from the vaults of Romanian synth pop." – Easterndaze

The most infectious sound in Cairo right now is that of Rozzma. A blend of maximalist synths, thick beats, psychedelia and traditional Arabic music, warped and processed using several production filters. Rozzma’s potential was confirmed by the pure adrenaline EP "Donya Faka", the first benchmark release on the new label from French duo Acid Arab. Rozzma does everything: program, rap (with auto-tune) and produces pure rave hypnosis, with thick bass lines like concrete walls and rhythms that hit you in the stomach, at times not dissimilar to hardcore.

The shows are followed by dj sets from “the northern ambassador of distant intimacy” Charlotte Bendiks and Future Nuggets boss Utopus.

A cross-pollinated fashion event introducing 4 emerging designers from Berlin

Creative director: Tanja Bombach | Choreographer: Michael-John Harper | Sound designer: Mikk Madisson | Designer: Don Aretino, Maria Miottke, Olga Khristolyubova, Johanna Liebl | Hair&Makeup: Kenny Campbell | Light design: Rasmus Lauvring | Production & Technical director: Troels Primdahl | Video: Nikolas Kasinos & Jeremey Carne (Ouroboros) | Dancers: Lukas Städtler, Ty Gurfein, Ernst van Hoek, Daniel Schabert, Jules Boutet, Peer Liening, Stephan Quinci, Jessica Comis | Web-/Graphic design: Matthias Neumann | Photography: Florian Hetz | Presented and produced by Trauma Bar und Kino

TRAUMABARUNDKINO is thrilled to present the cross-pollinated fashion show NOW YOU MAY TELL THAT I'VE BEEN SEEN BY YOU, which brings together fashion and contemporary dance. Exploring the body and it’s movements, we merge the inner and outer expressions through an emotional approach to fashion. Four emerging fashion designers from Berlin showcase their varied, gender free collections in the intimate framework of a versatile and fluid performance.

The myth of Diana and Actaeon outlines this show - a venture into the conflicts inhabiting human nature at it’s most fundamental level.

The piece exposes primal human behaviour with the implicit price of being consumed by its intensity, as one gradually becomes a victim of their own drive. We explore the dimensions of voice as the only non-organic form of expression in the human body. We channel it’s raw power outwards. Exercising unprocessed, unfocused anger as creative liberation is an authentic form of shaping one's presence. Unleashed acceptance of raw aggression and its tones. Non-judgemental embrace of its potential.
As the inner struggle takes over the body, words become ranting, demeanour becomes rage – a fully rounded human being shines through in all its complexity.

Don Aretino invites a shift in perspective – investigating the fear of the unknown, he sets the viewpoint in an isolated space from which otherness is to be invaded, alienated. Solar, insular. Hybrid nomads evolve within islands of contemporary meaning and wonderment.

A complex labyrinth unfolds through the coloured glass of Maria Miottke’s vision as she creates composite identities based on narrative sequences of dreams where dimensions mingle and nature fools the viewer with patterns and designs.

How can we fight for things we believe in? What forms can strength and resistance take nowadays? How can our will to fight be born with the fact that we, and the whole world, are falling apart? Olga Khristolyubova’s work explores the symbiotic conflict of vulnerability and aggression through intertwining military functionality with the exposed nature of undergarments and bedding.

Shadows move, shapes come into sight – a fraction of inadvertance – and they’re gone. Johanna Liebl generates ‘aesthetics of disappearance’; ethereal forms, diaphanous membranes; mirrors, ungraspable glimpses of existence vanishing into a parallel world, into one’s own self.

works in Bogotá, Colombia.

Alexandra Cardenas

Using open source software like SuperCollider and TidalCycles, her work is focused on the exploration of the musicality of code and the algorithmic behaviour of music. An important part of this exploration consists of the practice of live coding. Having an intense activity as teacher and performer of live coding, Alexandra is among the pioneers of live coding in electroacoustic music and part of the forefront of the Algorave scene. Currently, she lives in Berlin, Germany, where she completed her Masters in Sound Studies at the Berlin University of the Arts.

Under the name BZGRL, London-born, Bratislava based musician Adam Juraszek produces jaggedly rhythmic dance music, littered with moments of razor-sharp sound design, plaintive
bombed-out echoes of UK bass musicks and tessellated, coalescing polyphonic figures.
While studying music in The Hague, he released his first EP Rendered Environment on international label SØVN Records presenting a blend of algorithmic musique concrète and found-sound collage, with some rhythmic cuts as well. Other activities included a collaboration with Sima Kim (‘Andalusia’), various remixes (e.g. for US/NL artist Fetter), loose tracks and multichannel concerts and multimedia collaborations. After graduating, he contributed the track ‘Koppelen’ (‘sharp and scathing’ - Holly Dicker, Resident Advisor) to the 010 compilation which also featured work from Roly Porter and Fis among others.

Calum Gunn

Calum Gunn is a Scottish artist/musician working in the fields of computer music, algorithmic composition and live coding. Live performances hinge on the creation of rhythms in live coding software TidalCycles, generating complex patterns and unexpected timbres using algorithmic means. He has released music on the SM-LL, Baba Vanga and FLUF record labels, and runs Conditional, a record label and radio show.

Coucou chloe • Golin• Simon Kaiser • Brat Star

We continue our early evening shows series with two performances by cocou chloe and Golin, seasoned with dj sets by Brat Star and Simon Kaiser.

Being one of the founders of London-based label NUXXE (alongside Shygirl and Sega Bodega), coucou chloe is no novice on the post-club music scene. With a thoroughly modern sound that has gestated online but lives primarily in the club, her beats range from sensuous and slow hip-hop bangers – complete with her modulated vocal raps – to nervously energetic four to the floor.

Golin finds inspiration in her Japanese roots, she crafts upbeat yet ethereal music you will have to dance to. Rin Suemi is a singer, producer, classically trained pianist and performance artist. Her performances as Golin are ridden with improvisation, carrying a strong and visceral focus on the body and its possible movements, as well as containing an instant spontaneity that turns her shows into perpetually surprising cinematic experiences.

Conan Osiris • Johan Papaconstantino • Charlotte Bendiks

Schizophrenic pop from Lisbon and Paris, followed by some dancefloor realness.

There’s a breath of fresh air in European pop. Conan Osiris, Portugal’s new queer icon, is up for a genre combination extravaganza, mixing fado with digital kizomba, dancehall, Cape-verdean funaná, metal and hip hop. Conan, inspired by the Japanese anime series of the same name. Osiris, inspired by the Egyptian god. Together they form the artistic persona of Tiago Miranda, who is as complex and thought provoking as his way of making music. He is a phenomenon that grew huge in eulogistic press reviews and with audiences in Portugal since the release of his last digital album “Adoro Bolos” (lit. I love cakes). He will perform for the first time in Berlin.

Johan Papaconstantino makes a sort of Mediteranean pop that could easily soundtrack your wedding . Crystallizing all the pop potential of traditional Greek music in a few period hits, Johan Papaconstantino quickly established himself as an artist to follow closely in Paris. Those who have had the chance to see him on stage can testify to the effectiveness of his riffs and texts (in French). With his minimal stage play and the intoxicating echo of his guitar, he promises a melancholy infused euphoric performance.

Charlotte Bendiks will continue the ceremonies after the live shows.

The Icelandic producer never ceases to amaze, shifting between techno to IDM and everything in between. On this event, Bjarki will present his LIVE A/V show for the first and only time in Berlin for the year 2019.

---- KYOKA
Kyoka is a Japanese musician and composer based in Berlin and Tokyo, who has gained notoriety for her glitch-heavy electronic productions resulting in a
broken pop-beat with experimental yet danceable rhythms.

---- ZIÚR
Ziúr is one of the most exciting producers to come out of the fringes of Berlin club music in the last few years. A new generation is breaking out of the techno mould and creating in a spirit of freedom and experimentation, taking seemingly incompatible influences and balancing them into a new and exciting sound.

The alien boogie commander is here to make you sweat! Outer space electro like you’ve never heard before.

The elusive Icelandic producer Kuldaboli is definitely one to watch. Expect authoritarian basslines, booming drums and romantic melodies fused together in a mysterious tsunami of sounds.

co-founder of label Leisure System, N. Beckett knows the makings of a good party.

BTV presents a special screening in the venues very own cinema, as well as visual installations throughout the venue. Looking forward to enjoying sights and sounds with you!

venue capacity is very limited, we recommend buying advance tickets! Separate cue for ticket holders.

Gazelle Twin Live

Charm Live

Phillip Jondo

Gazelle Twin presents her sonic take on the state of England today, her new live show Pastoral.
“A phenomenally crafted and produced dark and cynical musical critique of modern political stagnation and deformation. Gazelle Twin is clever, funny and scarily honest with her lyrics, all of which pairs amazingly with her dark electronic lullaby and fairy tale inspired Industrial instrumentation. Pastoral is an album that demands the listeners full attention and rewards them fully for it.” (Gwynplaine de Pétroleuse for Bandcamp)

Charm showcases her live concert as a hybrid amalgam within experimental pop music. The artist fractures the conventional spectrums of poetry, songwriting and music production as well as gender expression and sexuality, using sound as a platform for unleashing narratives. Early this month, Charm released A Body I Don’t Know the first single of her debut EP set to release later this year. (

The 2 shows are followed by a Dj set from Salon des Amateurs and NTS radio resident Philipp Jondo.

An ode to the Other. A desire to connect. A celebration of the future.

Choreographed and performed by Sedrig Verwoert & Christiaan De Donder. Press photo: Casper Kofi. / Graphic Design: Matthias Neumann.

They/Them encapsulates these hopes and ideas into the frame of contemporary dance performance, building out from it a non-binary reconceptualization of traditional gender roles and identity. To celebrate the True Self against the ever-present barriers of homophobia, class bigotry, systemic racism and toxic masculinity is a powerful act—here, that beauty is birthed on stage.

Crafted meticulously from the minds and separately shared experiences of Sedrig Verwoert and Christiaan De Donder, They/Them weave their autobiographical narratives with the seasoned practice of professionals and the raw emotion of those who are often put on the fringes. Classically ‘male’ and ‘female’ dance roles gracefully slide to and from each performer, fluidic ephemera swapped out amongst the duo’s chimeric blend of dance styles. In each facet—from voguing and house to classical—shines the light of their identity, a mirror that reflects their shared faces.

They/Them will make its German debut in Berlin’s interdisciplinary art space, film kino and dance club Trauma. An independent hub of creativity, the queer-positive hybrid of art and nightlife is an ideal setting to host Verwoert and De Donder’s high-impact performance. Recently presented at Paris’ Palais de Tokyo, the piece has already been awarded The Leo Spreksel Award and the BNG Dance Prize.

An emotional and relatable statement against oppression, racism and binary gender roles, They/Them is a truly visually and mentally arresting experience.

Butoh Workshop w/Mushimaru Fujieda

We are honored to present an intensive workshop with one of greatest living masters of Butoh.

Internationally acclaimed Mushimaru Fujieda will over three days be giving lectures in his personal interpretation of Butoh, which he calls ‘Tennen Nikutai Shi’ [Natural Physical Poetry] - a term inspired by his collaborations with Allen Ginsberg. Fujieda hails from Aichi, in central Japan, where he originally worked as an actor, producer, writer, and director. Following his work with the avantgarde theatre ‘Ishiha’ in Osaka as well as the solo performance unit ‘Mushimaru Dokugi’, he formed the Butoh dance group ‘The Physical Poets’ in 2002. He has performed and shared his teaching for more than 20 years all over the world.

Sequence #01 by Elza Ozolīte and Killian Butler
[ @elizaozolina ] [ @killianbutler ]
With their first collaboration, the artists Elza Ozolīte and Killian Butler continue their artistic research on the perception and construction of persona, traditional roles within society, and idealised beauty. Their artistic practice consists of merging mediums organically in a chaotic amalgamation, including sculpture, performance, video and photography. This work in particular is a commentary on domesticity and a continuation of the exploration of the themes of hedonism, ritualistic behaviors, perversion of the persona and distortion/dismantling of perceived/unattainable perfection based on societal pressure and custom. A central feature of the piece is the female body and the voyeuristic gaze > the viewer as the voyeur. Elements of guilt, embarrassment and shame are brought to the surface, shown through the figure; both the physical performer and the projected performer, hiding beneath a skin-like covering while performing almost-sexualised movements, the covering acting as a protective veil between viewer and performer.

Kévin Bray
[ @bray_kevin ]
This Amsterdam-based artist is just finishing a 2 year residency at the acclaimed Rijksakademie. His work oscillates between several mediums through which he questions the existence of the image and its modes of production. After attempting to understand the form and language of a particular medium, he applies these codes to another medium, blurring the lines and challenging perception.
His video work acts as a collage more than montage, showing the links and gaps between the layers involved in the making of the images. You can see which tools, layers, and mediums he uses — making his videos almost transparent and involving the viewer in the creative process.

KEYS: Artificial Intelligence | Lexachast • Lorem • N1L & more

In the second edition of KEYS, critical focus is placed on AI and its implications in art, creative production and performance.

Lectures by Jenna Sutela and Francesco D'Abbraccio

Performances by Lexachast, Lorem, N1L, Bill Kouligas

Lexachast - LIVE A/V

Lexachast is an ongoing collaborative work by Amnesia Scanner, Bill Kouligas and Harm van den Dorpel.

Initially birthed as a joint, improvised performance between Amnesia Scanner and Kouligas at the ICA, London in 2015, it was later recreated and extended with visual artist van den Dorpel into a 15-minute online-only audiovisual work – known simply as Lexachast. Since then, it has expanded into a live show that has been performed at Transmediale / CTM Festival, Unsound Krakow & Adelaide, and LEV Festival. Now to be released on PAN, is a new document of Lexachast in its current, full-grown form. Whilst broadly inspired by the experience derived from and exposure to algorithmic patterns as generated by visual artist Harm van den Dorpel’s specially-devised program, the work is a sonic reference to the fallouts of avant-EDM and cyberdrone. This in turn is simultaneously mirrored by the perturbing visuals, created by a unique algorithm that sources and blends various filtered imagery from DeviantArt and Flickr in real time – with a bias towards the NSFW, extreme banality, and ornamental melancholia. The results were a perfect fit for the deliberate intention of non-intent, an anti-video of sorts, which ended up as a defining element for the project. The vinyl version of the release comes in different cover variations, created with Harm van den Dorpel’s ever-evolving, image-sourcing algorithm. The album is mastered by Rashad Becker and comes as a limited vinyl edition and digital formats.

Amnesia Scanner is a Berlin-based music duo, performing arts group, experience design studio and production house, created by Finnish-born Ville Haimala and Martti Kalliala. Founded in 2014, Amnesia Scanner's approach is informed by a unique perspective on technology and the way it mediates contemporary experience. System vulnerabilities, information overload and sensory excess inform their work, which has found a home in both clubs and galleries. Building on their mixtape AS Live [][][][][] (2014), Amnesia Scanner’s critically-acclaimed audio play Angels Rig Hook (2015) laced a potpourri of dancefloor tactics with a machinic narrator. Their dual EPs for Young Turks, AS and AS Truth (2016), distilled this immersive environment into an abrasive collection of cryptorave tools. Amnesia Scanner’s grandest musical statement came in 2018 when they released their critically acclaimed debut album Another Life on PAN. Coupling pop song structures with avant-EDM productions the album evocatively explores a schizophrenic present marked by narratives of a slow apocalypse or salvation via technology. From lullabies to overheated doombahton and nu-metal-gabba Another Life’s mood swings between trill hope and casual threat. Amnesia Scanner has presented work at art institutions such as ICA London, HKW Berlin, Lafayette Anticipations in Paris and the Serpentine Gallery Marathon in London. They collaborate with PWR Studio for their design and visual direction.

Lorem - LIVE A/V

Lorem is a music-driven multidisciplinary project working with neural networks and artificial intelligence (AI) systems to produce sounds, visuals and texts. In the last three years, Lorem built a collaborative platform involving AI artists (Mario Klingemann, Yuma Kishi), AI researchers (Damien Henry, Nicola Cattabiani), Videoartists (Karol Sudolski, Mirek Hardiker) and music instruments designers (Luca Pagan, Paolo Ferrari) in the processes. Adversarial Feelings is the first release by Lorem, and it's a 22 min AV piece + 9 music tracks and a book. The record was released on APR 19th on Krisis Publishing via Cargo Music UK

N1L is an A/V artist, producer/dj based between Riga, Berlin and Cairo. His work intersect sound and visuals in different contexts/forms, from fluid "club" music experiments, industrial noise performances, collaborations with contemporary dancers or sound design for site specific art installations. He will present a premiered A/V performance based on his latest piece "Neural Uberization" - exploration into extremes of attention economy in the era of late capitalism.

Bill Kouligas - DJ SET [PAN]

Jenna Sutela works with words, sounds, and other living materials. Her audiovisual pieces, sculptures, and performances seek to identify and react to precarious social and material moments, often in relation to technology. Sutela's work has been presented at museums and art contexts internationally, including Guggenheim Bilbao, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Serpentine Galleries. She is a Visiting Artist at The MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) in 2019-20.

Francesco D'Abbraccio - LECTURE / PERFORMANCE

Francesco D’Abbraccio is an Italian musician, visual artist and independent researcher. He is active in underground music and art scene since 2008 with electronic experimental duo Aucan (more then 400 live performances across Europe, Africa and Asia), with the collective Krisis and recently with his new audiovisual project Lorem. Focusing on politics of representation and transmedial culture, he realised projects for a wide variety of institutions. His work has been exhibited at London Design Biennale, Sheffield International Documentary Festival, Museo Triennale di Milano, Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna di Roma, Museo MAXXI (Rome), Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa di Venezia. He is creative director of Krisis Publishing, an independent publishing and curatorial platform investigating the impact of media culture on contemporary societies. In 2013 he founded Studio Frames, a small multidisciplinary design studio based in Brescia.

Welcome to a room.
Over there, it wraps you up in its weightless susurrous fabrics,
hypnotizes with its warm loud whispers,
seduces by its imperceptive soft touch.
The room, where things that are not meant to coexist

Being captured in only one of them is flat
yet it feels haunting.
You are caught in a representation of yourself.
You want to free yourself.

EMPTY HOUR [gravitational attraction]

a site-specific fusion of nothings

Built by two choreographers with their interdisciplinary ensemble on the clashes between the now, imaginations of then, and the presence of the gone, we [who?] pause to reflect on boredom, empty time, into a state where there is nothing national any longer, nor absolute. The guests' entrance is an agreement to be not a viewer, but a body to be read and to read, a participant. Designed purpose limits action. Get lost and found (repeat) through landscapes of skin, light, sound, silence, words, movement, stillness. Who is the performer here? What time is it, really?

Date: 13th of July
Doors open at 21.00 - performance starts at 22.00

The Ensemble : Andy Zondag [dancer], Atalyá Tirosh [soprano], Daniele Mana [sound artist], Dejha Ti [visual artist], Don Aretino [fashion designer], Elizabeth Gibson [dancer], Ras Mus L [lighting designer], Samira Mahboub [dancer], Tom Brand [dancer] & guests!

Akiram En - DJ SET

First starting his DJ career in the mid-90s, Akiram EN has become a permanent fixture in the Japanese underground scene. His dance-oriented range is from left-field techno to avant-garde, while his deep listening sets are inspired by obscure sounds, as his signature style conjures a place where listeners can deeply experience and perceive his music. Akiram EN came into prominence through performing at Japan’s leading rural Festival, and the formidable techno parties including none other than Future Terror. His contribution to the music scene in Japan extends beyond his role as DJ. He organizes an ongoing deep-listening series called Ideala, held weekly at Forestlimit (the center of Tokyo’s experimental music scene), as well as resident of the party 'SCI FI' at SHeLTeR, a highly-regarded audiophile venue in the outskirts of the capital. He is a champion of local talent, often inviting DJs and vinyl collectors from across Japan to play alongside him.

Horo | Latency | Field Records

ENA is a music producer from and based in Tokyo. He is a major player in the Japanese underground dance music scene for more than a decade. Taking influences from early drum & bass productions, rave sound and abstract hip hop, ENA is recognized for his tight production techniques and massive audio dynamics. Uncompromising, forward thinking and unique, his releases on 7even Recordings, Horo and Latency brought international attention and have led to collaborations with like-minded virtuosos such as Felix K and Rashad Becker which were both invited to perform on the main stage of Berlin Atonal festival (in 2016 and 2017 respectively.) and MUTEK As a DJ, he has been playing regularly in the main clubs in Tokyo such as Unit, Contact, WWW and Club Asia as well as underground haunts like Forestlimit and Soup for many years. His expert music selection and technical excellence continues to impress the audience in and outside of Japan.

Exploited Body - DJ SET

Exploited Body is the alias of multi-disciplinary artist Noah Kin, currently based in Helsinki. 2018 saw the release his debut 'Hostility' and the colossal 'Contortion', solidifying his presence, with his tracks played by peers such as Lee Gamble, Kablam and Ziúr, among others. His second EP - 'Threnody' - released via LA-based TAR, marks the producer’s departure from the club-forward sonics of his previous efforts, trading in the driving drums and feverish synths for a more obstreperous aesthetic and bringing in vocals for the first time.

Hesska - DJ SET
Club C I T S | NTS Radio

A staple in the Manchester club scene, Hesska utilises her background in the city’s noise and industrial scene to inform expert selection of forward thinking club sounds and intense rave tracks. Equally comfortable crafting atmospheric ambient opening slots and relentless, thumping closing sets, her performances are a masterclass in merging seemingly disparate genres through fast, innovative mixing. As a long standing host at NTS Radio Manchester, recently taking up residency at Threads Radio and outstanding curator at Club CITS, Hesska's journeys through the club's sonic margins have solidified her as a legend among her peers.

M a n a presents ’Seven Steps Behind' - LIVE A/V
Hyperdub Records

Daniele Mana is a sound designer and composer who grew up in Torino. He found technology to be the best tool to overcome his lack of academic training and find his own method to write music. His works feature unpredictable evolutions and an unique relationship to melody, while writing for theatre, film and advertising alongside his artistic projects as Vaghe Stelle, in addition to One Circle - an ensemble formed by Mana, Lorenzo Senni and Francesco Fantini, and his latest project M a n a, with 2017’s debut EP for Hyperdub, ‘Creature’, which was a taut, evocative suite of beatless, almost neo-classical electronics. ‘Seven Steps Behind’ sounds like musical world-building rather than straightforward song writing. The borders between reality and imagination have collapsed on and into each other.

Meuko Meuko + NAXS corp. - LIVE A/V
Danse Noire | NTS Radio

Meuko! Meuko! is a Taipei-based live experimental sound artist, performing since 2015. Each performance contains improvisation and new evolving elements, collecting from various different objects and strange noises. Founded in 2010, NAXS [Network Afterlife Existence Storage] Corp. is a Taipei-based art practice that combines a wide range of disciplines including theatre, installation and audiovisual live performance. They focus on the transformation of contemporary senses, body, desire, ritual and internet aesthetics.

patten - DJ SET

Visionary London-based producer patten is renowned for hi-tech immersive AV shows and cross-platform projects, tracing a path through design, installation, film, programming, music, live performance, and publishing. Their recent work has been featured at ICA and Tate Modern in London, in addition to ongoing art direction for Dan Snaith's Daphni alias, simultaneous '3049' art installations in both London and Amsterdam, live tour visuals for LA's The Glitch Mob and establishing the 555-5555 web forum following their creative agency of the same name. patten’s hypermodern DJ sets explore the outer edges of new dance musics, dialling through heavyweight club sounds and styles with a prismatic energy.

a dance performance by Yotam Peled

A force in our chest expands and withdraws like the waves, at times aiming to devour us. A burden to carry. A role to play.
Is paradise a place with no structures? Are we capable of imagining it, even for a brief moment?
A single change of detail in the story of creation ultimately leads to a redistribution of power. In this parallel, dystopian existence, five individuals collide, and through their conflict unleash a rave - an attempt to free themselves from their chains of oppression.
ALPHA is an intense, highly physical dance performance that explores through acts of domination and submission, pleasure and pain, a possible transformation and extinction of gender roles.

Dates: 21,22,23 of August
Doors open at 20.00 - show begins at 20.30
Duration: 60 mins

TAME w/ Miley Serious, Black Merlin, Badsista & more

After a summer hiatus, TAME returns for another queer banger featuring a genre-defying lineup, a curated video experience, an alien indoor garden and new darkroom geographies.

Serving Sao Paolo realness, BADSISTA brings a harder and faster side to her peripheral grooves from pounding ravey beats to swinging Funk Carioca jams for a serious workout. Miley Serious delivers one of her diverse and relentless sets of rubbery techno, blistering breaks and twisted industrial. Sonic shapeshifter Black Merlin conjures dark hypnotic beats which allude to his mystic explorations of densely forested lands. Borusiade deals melodic heavy hands with dark gems of obscura and Fast Forward-affiliated DJ Tool rounds off the lineup with his uplifting hybrid beats.

Meanwhile in the cinema, a Berlin premiere: the screening of all 5 episodes of Jacolby Satterwhite’s hyperqueer fantasy video series, Reifying Desire.

Vessel & Pedro Maia • IVVVO • Lotic • LYZZA

Vessel presents his latest a/v show alongside Berlin visual artist Pedro Maia. A composer and producer whose persistent evolution cannot be second guessed, Sebastian Gainsborough's output as Vessel has reached another peak with his chamber-influenced and classically-suffused third LP, Queen Of Golden Dogs, released on Tri Angle last year. Influenced by a range of writers, the painter Remedios Varo and a new love, the album is a marked departure from Vessel’s previous work.

IVVVO brings his new live show to Berlin after the release of the excellent “DoG” album on Halcyon Veil in March. Like a magpie with fancy taste, IVVVO picks the shiniest and most affective elements of contemporary dance/rock/pop and electronica - from deconstructed trance synths to blockbuster sound design and choral arrangements - and then weaves them into searing, reactive expressions of modernity. The results are skizzy, veering from anxious to ecstatic and often in the space of one song.

Fierce performer and Berlin icon Lotic brings one of their thrilling and unpredictable dj sets to Trauma. “Lotic exudes a palpable sexual energy onstage. In a typical DJ set, they might suggestively bend and contort their body, relishing the spotlight behind (and on) the decks. This fierce spirit carries through into Lotic's jarring bass experiments, whose corrosive sounds evade conventional forms—they're best thought of as treacherous soundscapes of unearthly shrieks, tectonic bass and brutalised vocal samples.“ (RA)

LYZZA has become a familiar face during radical club nights and has been seen doing shows with Mykki Blanco and on line-ups alongside names like Fatima Al Qadiri, Evian Christ,Le1f, Yves Tumor and SOPHIE. “The ascending DJ-slash-producer-slash-vocalist allows people to reclaim their own bodies through her heavy club beats, turning each venue into a true safe haven for everyone to move freely and with conviction.” - Glamcult

Sub Liminal: A CTM 2020 Future Prequel

› Born In Flamez (DJ)
› Abdu Ali (live)
› Angel-Ho (live)
› Gabber Modus Operandi (live)
› AYA b2b xin (DJ)

Glimpse into what lies ahead and peek into yesteryear with Sub Liminal: A CTM 2020 Future Prequel. A slew of boundary-defying artists arrive at Trauma Bar und Kino for a night of uncompromising, outrageous sounds.

Opening the night is Born in Flamez, known for subverting gender and genre with a panoply of influences somewhere in the nether regions between deconstructed pop, lo-fi, grime, and classical music.

Baltimore legend Abdu Ali is an avant-garde electronic music artist, writer, and curator, whose work is an idiosyncratic blend of punk, jazz, Baltimore club music, and rap. Unapologetically black and queer, Abdu Ali’s work is bold, raw, and most importantly life-affirming.

Also performing live is polyglot performer, vocalist, DJ, rapper, and producer Angel-Ho, who first started making waves as one of NON’s co-founders. With releases such as Ascension (Halcyon Veil) and Red Devil (NON) under her belt, she shared her “debut proper,” Death Becomes Her, in 2019 via Hyperdub.

Following a standout performance at CTM 2019, Gabber Modus Operandi descend upon Berlin once again. Born out of shared obsessions for all things high-octane, fast-paced, and outrageous, Gabber Modus Operandi explode gabber, footwork, grindcore, and noise with a number of traditional Indonesian sounds such as jathilan, dangdut koplo, and funkot.

AYA (fka LOFT) and xin will close the evening with a raucous b2b. With a style seemingly forged by the chaotic cultural mish-mash of the internet, Manchester-based AYA is equally at home mashing up the dance, crying onstage, and shouting at unwitting audience members. She joins xin for a venture through bass, breaks, and bootlegs. The Subtext-signee is set to release their debut LP, MELTS INTO LOVE, this September, solely via independent platforms.

This event is a prequel to CTM Festival 2020 – Liminal which will take place across multiple Berlin venues, running from January 24 - February 2. We will begin announcing the line-up in October so make sure to RSVP and not miss out on the news.

The indefinable Klein presents Lifetime - an incredibly personal assemblage of diary-like sonic excerpts.

Stepping onwards from her previous releases on Hyperdub, Klein's latest album is a dynamic exploration of her experience, collated together through a meandering walk with sound and spoken word.

CORIN draws from her training in classical piano to merge post-apocalyptic nuances and icy synth sounds. Her latest album, Manifest, is described as "a story of manipulated time that exists out of instrumental and vocal proportions". Recent collaborations have included AV performances with visual artist Tristan Jallet and performance artist Justin Shoulder.

Needing little introduction in Berlin, RUI HO has cemented herself as one of the most genre-fluid producer/DJs around. Her recent release on Objects Ltd. titled 'Becoming is an Eventful Situation' has been widely applauded for it's intent to break through the spectrum of expected club sounds, and diving deeper into mysterious sonic waves.

Charm: Extended Play

Trauma Bar und Kino presents the preview concert of Charm's EP1, her debut EP set to release beginning of 2020.

This concert is a journey into Charm's most intimate records. The beat-driven essence, the vulnerability of both sound and lyrics builds an affective, emotional world that (in the context of Charm's previous works too) has freedom as its guiding force.

Every track is a world builder and on the whole this EP draws a world towards unifying extremes.

Alongside Charm is Shakoor Hakeem (US), Vincent Arp (DE) and Yaminah Garcia (BR). The show also features performing artists Kebra (BR) and Slim Soledad (BR).

Charm is a multifaceted artist with the life story of a kind. Her raw and tangible vocals sets the ground to her ethereal compositions. Her unique blend of r&n and soul makes space for a new voice found on this wise young storyteller.

Her solo works include Body Memory, 2018 and EP1, 2020. As a producer, she lends a hybrid infusion within experimental pop. The artist fractures the conventional spectrums of poetry and music production delivering a unique blend of r&b and soul.

Over the past three years, the artist has been taking part in events such as Sonic Acts, CTM Festival, Kunstenfestivaldesarts and 3hd Festival, scored/collaborated in shows for Berlin Biennale, MoMA Warsaw, KW Institute of Contemporary Art and many others, completed in October 2017 her first tour in Asia and just recently an european tour alongside Pan Daijing.

Early this year, Charm released A Body I Don’t Know the first single of her debut EP set to release beginning 2020.

TAME w/ Nene H, Clouds, CEM, Dj Gigola and Dj Mantis

Our queer banger TAME is back and sharper than a razor with two very special guests as well as a comeback from our usual suspects behind the decks.

Scottish duo Clouds brings their faint cries from past eras carefully tabbed and then hurled into a post-industrial hell-future, a hardcore-trance-techno Fantazia with a splash of humour. Live from Earth affiliate Dj Gigola puts a lot of emphasis on the performativity of mixing, engaging in a non-verbal dialogue with the audience, taking every variable of the night into account. Herrensauna’s CEM brings his non-linear emotive hysteria to the dancefloor while our permanent house guest, Dj Mantis will bleed hard-edged rave sounds. If you’re staying long enough, you're in for a treat : Nene H. is closing.

3hd 2019: A concert & screening by CURL with Akinola Davies Jr.

Fluid Wor(l)ds

London-based collective and label Curl presents their new project, a concert and short film called “Mayonnaise, Corn on the Cob and My Car”, produced in collaboration with director Akinola Davies Jnr (aka Crack Stevens).

The latter artist and filmmaker examines themes such as origin, identity, skin color and socialization through the reproduction and re-contextualization of visual narratives.

Premiering at Gent Film Festival in Belgium a week earlier, the interdisciplinary performance will have its German debut at 3hd.

3hd 2019: Switching Codes

Assuming sound as a universal language, this evening of live performance and a DJ set, looks at music as a mutable and ever-shifting means of expression.

Taking place at hybrid venue Trauma Bar und Kino in a new part of Berlin’s Quartier Heidestrasse, "Switching Codes" explores a developing culture where old and new codes come together in a composite visual and sonic vocabulary. Here, an emerging generation of non-prescriptive artists and audience members exist in the shadows of the curly pop continuum.

It’s a place where everything goes, and everyone gets it.

3hd 2019: E-Work. Transcending Realities

"E-Work" acknowledges capitalism's subsumption of every aspect of contemporary life. With the dawn of the internet, leisure becomes work and work becomes leisure.

This new economy informs a particular kind of online underground, where future-forward subcultures both draw from and feed into the mainstream market.

The musicians, producers, performers, and DJs performing the "E-Work" at Trauma Bar und Kino reflect these aesthetic choices. The world becomes a whirlpool of influences and uncertainties, revealing a transference of minds and emotions, realities and fictions, countercultural modes and pop signifiers.

Alva Noto & Anne-James Chaton: Alphabet

Poet and performer Anne-James Chaton and electronic musician Carsten Nicolai aka Alva Noto perform their new multimedia project, ALPHABET – decoding the spaces between signs and signals.

The performance takes its inspiration from the Etymologies of Isidore of Seville – a gargantuan encyclopaedia from the seventh century and the most widely-used textbook of the Middle Ages. Taking etymologies as its starting point, ALPHABET explores the strategies man devised to represent the world and applies them to the digital age. It’s a piece that invites the spectator to immerse themselves in the multiple relationships between language, its digital translations and our understanding of the world.

This work is the latest of many collaborations between the pair. Their various projects blend machinery and language, creating a dense electronic sound structure. With ALPHABET – also being released as a record – they speak a new language generated by the fusion of objective poetry and minimal music.

ATØ with Ziúr • Juliana Huxtable • Rabit • Ledef • Rupert YYAA

ATØ exists to support all people who struggle finding a place in this world, who are having trouble being respected AND celebrated for who they are. For everyone who is part of resisting the status quo, for all survivors, outcasts and weirdos. For people who fight for their existence, every day. ATØ is here to celebrate respect, human rights, love, intersectionality, change, pushing boundaries, bravery, critical thought, genuine support and curiosity. ATØ is not here to please, but to disrupt and to connect us in solidarity. It is time to take back what has been taken away from us by the institution.

Trauma Bar und Kino presents the record release event of ATØ on November 1st, with a stellar line-up curated with Ziúr.

"For the Record Release Party of ATØ, I've gathered a group of friends who strike me with their exceptional brilliance; I’m blown away by them. These loved ones live the best example on how to radically push the limits of artistry and life, while still being grounded, uncompromising and ultimately badass. Apart from ATØ being about taking over the world, it always has been about celebrating the good relationships, strong bonds, friendships, ultimate allies. This event shows one possible scenario.

Love, Ziúr"

Sub Liminal #2: A CTM 2020 Future Prequel

› FAKA (live)
› KABLAM (live)
› Dj Haram (DJ)

Glimpse into what lies ahead and peek into yesteryear with Sub Liminal #2: a CTM 2020 Future Prequel. A slew of boundary-defying artists arrive at Trauma Bar und Kino for a night of uncompromising, outrageous sounds.

Fela Gucci and Desire Marea, better known as FAKA take on post-apartheid homophobia, transphobia, and masculinity, via “an intoxicating potion of gqom, pop, gospel and ancient rhythms, often danced out in a hyper-sexual blur of New York ballroom and ancestral African styles,” (The Quietus) as heard on EPs such as Bottoms Revenge and Amaqhawe.

KABLAM’s productions have been described as “a brutalist concoction of the sledgehammer and the spiritual.” (The Guardian) From the lilting hardcore of 2016’s Furiosa to the spiralling chaos of Confusía, KABLAM’s output is reliably raw.

Discwoman affiliate DJ Haram is a producer and DJ who throws down for Jersey, Philly, and Baltimore with club and booty bounce sets, but has also been known to pay homage to her roots in the traditions of Middle Eastern music and DIY noise scenes. Earlier this year, she released Grace via Hyperdub, a release which was described as being “at times so focused and earth-shakingly forceful that it's a little intimidating.” (Resident Advisor)

Pininga is a São Paulo-based DJ and producer, one third of Baile Furioso, and one quarter of Club Tormenta, and is also affiliated with South American label NAAFI, the Stockholm-based Staycore, as well as queer MC Linn da Quebrada.

This event is a prequel to CTM Festival 2020 – Liminal which will take place across multiple Berlin venues, running from January 24 - February 2. We will begin announcing the line-up in October so make sure to RSVP and not miss out on the news.

TAME w/ Volition Immanent, Cera Khin, Parrish Smith, Nene H.

TAME is back for the final edition of the year, more hypnotic and tense than ever.

There will be rare live performance by Volition Immanent, a disorderly duo built and engineered for high-intensity live shows, hectic mosh pits and tireless crowd surfing. Tunisian-born and Berlin rising-star Cera Khin brings her “rave apocalypse” sounds from high energy techno to electro, from acid to early rave, and from hardcore to gabber. Hovering between body music, electronica and deep-burning industrial, yet rejecting the conventions of all three, Parrish Smith crafts a sound that’s both familiar and deeply inexplicable. Boivoid, Bucharest-via-Neukölln rave enthusiast is making his TAME debut, while a newfound Southeast European visual queerness takes over the cinema.

And Nene H... need we say more?

Colin Self presents Siblings (Elation VI)

Artist and performer Colin Self presents Siblings, the sixth and final part of The Elation Series, a sci-fi opera encompassing, performance, music, sculpture, and video that he has been developing since 2011. Trauma Bar und Kino presents the full performance which was shown last year at MoMA PS1.

Structured like a game, Siblings functions as a participatory performance, assigning the audience roles and responsibilities. Divided into analysts, activists, archivists, and spies, these groups expand their subjective encounters of text, song, and dance into ruptures of narrative analysis. A playful examination of Donna J. Haraway's recent book Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene, the performance offers new ways of re-configuring our relationship to the earth and its inhabitants in the wake of ecological devastation, foregrounding the necessity of new narrative structures to realise a better world.

Informed by the artist’s epistemological research, Siblings places a non-biological family at its center. The characters, bound together by curiosity and queer kinship, navigate living collectively on a damaged planet. Self describes how “the worlds I am interested in writing into existence are continuous, irresolute, and fragmented strategies. These strategies are not utopic. They are non-holistic, celebratory subjective, and ideologically beyond the will to measure.”

Presented in collaboration with performers Lyra Pramuk, Tara-Jo Tashna, Sam Banks, and lexi welch.

All Fruits Ripe

ALL FRUITS RIPE is a new film series at TRAUMA BAR UND KINO for BIPOC filmmakers (black, indigenous, people of colour) exploring LGBTQ* themes and topics. The title originates from the Jamaican Patois expression meaning »all is well« and aims to highlight the powerful and impactful work of visual artists working across marginalised, socio-political intersections.

The night will feature a selection of films from four Berlin-based artists, exploring black queer relationships, Germany's colonial history, the convergence of black traditions and rituals in addition to a profile on Berlin first BPOC based drag house.

The event will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by ALL FRUITS RIPE founder, Candice Nembhard, further exploring the purpose behind the selected films, the need for BIPOC and LGBTQ* representation in archives and digital media, as well as Berlin’s impact on queer people of colour and their creative processes.

In turn, we are ready to attack, to offend, to plough, to smash, to tear to pieces, to kill the other mercilessly, but we are always very careful not to get our hands dirty.«

The Transcendence Orchestra, Punctum, Thoom, HATAM

Traumabarundkino continues its unconventional concert series, leaning towards the meditative and esoteric.

The Transcendence Orchestra is a collaborative project of Anthony Child [well known under his techno producer alias Surgeon] and Daniel Bean of Bleep43. For this occasion, they have invited artist Darren Russell to join as well, in an attempt to harmonize the acoustic and synthetic. They are joined by Punctum - the synergistic duo of Caterina Barbieri and Carlo Maria Amadio, who rarify sound to a near elemental level, exploring abyssal sonic spaces, and Thoom, who delves deep into a minimalistic narrative, mixing voice and drone.

The evening will begin and end with DJ sets by HATAM - one half of the duo Hacklander \ Hatam, member of LABOUR and co-founder of the inspirational NK Projekt space in Berlin.

This event is limited capacity, it is advised to purchase a ticket in advance. We limit the number of guests to preserve an intimate experience.

Mary-Audrey Ramirez and LUKAS8K

From 17 January on, the installative multi-dimensional work and exhibition QT UR EA by Mary-Audrey Ramirez and LUKAS8K will be on view at TRAMABARUNDKINO. The work incorporates dance, performance, installation, sound and real-time virtual worlds and features collaborators such as choreographer Ali Heffetz and audiovisual artists bod [包家巷], Alza54 and Simon Goff.

The opening starts on 17 January at 9:00 p.m. with a 3 hour-long opening performance, which slowly increases in intensity and combines installation, motion-capture and real-time virtual worlds, as well as dance, sound and permaculture. Eight performers will meet each other, engage in spontaneous ceremonies or stage fight-like scenes.

During this night and through the eight weeks of the exhibition, TRAUMABARUNDKINO will be transferred in a science fiction narrative derived from the virtual arenas of open video games.
The work will continue to expand and evolve over this period.

QT,UR EA, in which exhibition, performance, and club merge into a new form, is on view until 14 March and will be accompanied by a curatorial program.

The project is curated by Madalina Stanescu.

New Models: SimSociety

QT UR EA/ Mary-Audrey Ramirez and LUKAS8K

TRAUMABARUNDKINO and New Models present: SimSociety, exploring MMORPGs as a social model, with Joshua Citarella & Cade.

In a two-part lecture, NEW MODELS hosts deep systems/infrastructure researcher CADE and NY-based artist JOSHUA CITARELLA to speak about how the ways we live and think in the online-space are materially impacting how the physical future will play out.

As the legitimacy of the mainstream media (MSM) fades, so too does the shared "truth" it upholds. In many ways, this is a good thing, making way for new norms. Yet the distributed journalism that is taking the MSM's place relies on online platforms that gamify narrative-building, rendering us players in MMORPG-like worlds -- with the arena being IRL Earth.

Joshua Citarella:

New Models is a media outlet for the critical analysis of art, tech, politics, and pop-culture.

This event is presented as part of the durational exhibition Qt Ur Ea, curated by Madalina Stanescu in collaboration with artists Mary-Audrey Ramirez and LUKAS 8K.

TRAUMABARUNDKINO presents a 2-part, parallel program featuring a lecture + workshop, gaming, installations and musical performances.

KINO: Feminist Gaming Group
19:30 – Talk: 'Guild of the Cunt’ by Eloïse Bonneviot
20:00 – Feminist Gaming Group workshop
21:00 – Live gaming featuring Quake 4

• Improvised string performance by Guilherme Rodrigues (Cello) and Higino Andrade (Double Bass)
• Delmore FX (live)
• Soundscape for WASTELAND by sound artist Olle Holmberg

Feminist Gaming Group
The Feminist Gaming Group organises intense multi-player gaming session tailored for beginners. The FGG specifically addresses individuals who identify as women, non-binary and allies. The aim of the sessions is to create a safe environment where collective discussions are welcomed.

TRAUMABARUNDKINO provides gaming laptops with everything pre-installed, so participants do not need to bring hardware.

‘WASTELAND’ installation by SEXES
WASTELAND attempts to articulate a tension between overwhelming awareness of a degrading environment and relative safety and beauty of our close surroundings. As mammals use their discharge to signify their territory, humanity pollutes the planet and covers it in waste, which will likely be our most enduring contribution to future environments.

This event is presented as part of the durational exhibition QT UR EA, curated by Madalina Stanescu in collaboration with Nada Schroer and artists Mary-Audrey Ramirez and LUKAS 8K.

The first TAME of the decade is happening in the freshly created environment QT UR EA with promises of offline experiential thrills.

Gabber Eleganza brings his post rave aesthetic in search of a hypothetical hardcore soul. Hailing from the Paris banlieues, Crystallmess brings her genre-defying sound continuum moving from abrasive zouk and dancehall to afro-trance. This TAME has a very special guest, Samuel Kerridge. Expect some overwhelming waves of rhythm’n’noise hyper-sensory stimulation. Dj Spit opens with a twist, while House of Trauma residents Nene H and Dj Mantis keep the lineup cute. Meanwhile in the cinema we show a glimpse of Frederik Heyman’s visual universe.

Catalogue of Disguise II

We are pleased to announce the next edition of our in-house fashion program: CATALOGUE OF DISGUISE II, showcasing four collections within an installation-based fashion performance at TRAUMA BAR UND KINO.

In continuation of the previous project, COD II reflects upon the idea of identities being captured within representations of themselves in our hyperconnected digitalized world. This work examines the traps of disguises and their expanded surroundings while experiencing a fickle and unsettling relationship to reality. In this site-specific performance, a horror state of pervasive anxiety and loss of control starts to haunt these escapist traps.

The audience will move through four different worlds of disguises and narratives, each simultaneously looping in different locations of TRAUMA BAR UND KINO.

CATALOGUE OF DISGUISE is a serial event and part of the fashion program at TRAUMA BAR UND KINO. The series invites performance artists, designers and the audience alike to renegotiate who we are. It's an attempt to generate a cultural perception of fashion that enables us to look beyond traditional runway settings to formulate an interdisciplinary approach to present fashion with performance. Working in an intersectional way these projects support the Berlin creative scene and provide a platform for emerging fashion designers.

House Of Kenzo / Authentically Plastic / Bonaventure / Endgame

Flyer Artwork by Air Max '97 Music

House of KENZO don’t give a fuck. Once the dolls are let loose there’s no tomorrow. Break a heal or die trying. Prep for an unhinged abyss of red lights in the mix and a performance only texans can deliver.

Multidisciplinary artist, performer and Nyege Nyege affiliate Authentically Plastic shines through a juggle of genres, tapping into fields of Ballroom, UK Bass, Gqom and Kwaito, all combined under the premise of being ‘out there’.

Try pinning down BONAVENTURE and you’ll know discover the true meaning of lagging behind. This one’s hungry and inevitably unstoppable, sharp on productions and kicking it hard on the decks. She’s a traveler and a lover and a true gem all over.

This could almost count as the Berlin debut of ENDGAME because whoever is capable of carrying memories from 5 years back, is probably too good at ‘life’ and should certainly not enter the gates of Traumabarundkino tonight. Sinners to the front, we’re not playing around.

Main princess LEDEF left us stunned last fall for Ziúr’s ATØ event and is surely gonna spark the sorta buzz, only moths chasing a candle can relate to. Tonight she’ll weave an additional DJ set around the HOK spiral.

The second in a series of events that New Models is hosting at Berlin’s Trauma Bar und Kino, SimCity 2020 will consider the ways in which the world's physical urban centers and internet "cities" of sorts—the clearnet metropolises and dark forest neighborhoods where we spend perhaps even more psychological time—interface now, in a time of public unrest and contagion. Featuring: a lecture-performance by Pierce Myers, Philip Maughan, and Bryan Wolff of Strelka’s Terraforming; and the premiere of Richard Kennedy’s new opera Fubu Fukú, 2020. Due to limited capacity, please reserve tickets (€10) in advance.

Fubu Fukú is an opera that collapses the 579 years since the initial Portuguese abduction on the west African coast to the present into 60 minutes . The queen of the 7 faced Swaggots watches Portuguese explorer Antoine Gonçalves on the beach hunting for seals where he first sees Sugar, a dynamic and heroic African man. Exploring the tension between the exotification and festishization of the black body through a journey from sugar to ketamine, Fubu Fukú offers an alternative queer version of the history of conquest and the desire to control and exploit the black body. The curse and fury unleashed onto the world after the murder of the African Queen has come to heed in 2020, by dissolving time and erasing borders , the opera bridges the gaps between now and then and creates a vortex within a painting that will transform and transcend the colonial project into the post plague future .

We speak of quarantining cities, of putting them in “lock-down,” and yet where, really, does the city end? Whether for agriculture, mining, energy or data, cities have always drawn resources from the periphery: vast territories that change so that the center doesn’t have to.

As COVID19 arrived in Moscow this spring, researchers from Strelka’s Terraforming program PIERCE MYERS, PHILIP MAUGHAN, and BRYAN WOLFF relocated to Berlin where they’ve been examining the infrastructural transformations that enable city life to continue almost as it had pre-virus — and what possibilities there may currently be for forging a more ecologically viable “city” in its expanded sense. Meeting up at the club for the first time since March, now in the middle-period of virus time, we ask: are we merely larping the before or already starting to embody the post-pandemic new?

Smooth Operations

Feat. Audrey Chen, Gajek & Lawrence Lek

Artwork : Paul Barsch for Gajek

We are navigating through new modalities of adaptation and intuitive curation. Our first indoor event in a while will be a soft evening with two live performances and a screening, with no deliberate connection.
The event has limited capacity, please purchase your tickets online in advance.

Audrey Chen [live]
"Audrey Chen has created an uncompromising and idiosyncratic music, tightly disciplined yet acoustically wild and heavy with implication. Her ultra-verbal vocalising, often reminiscent of the visceral and emotionally charged sound poetry of François Dufréne or Henri Chopin, exposes physiological aspects of utterance that are concealed within standardised articulation and day to day speech. Fleshy, breath-driven and flecked with spittle, Chen's voice emanates not just from her mouth but from an ensemble of upper body surfaces, channels, passages, and cavities." - Julien Cowley THE WIRE
Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised, is completely un-processed and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of an analog synthesiser, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language.

Gajek [live]
Gajek presents the latest live depiction of his freshly released album “Vitamin D”. From an East German perspective Vitamin D inscribes itself into the progressive myth of Krautrock by shifting the focus to a different side of German history marked by the material traces of the Cold War. This is music that knows about the coexistence of modernism and its ruins, music about the fact that both can be there at the same time: space programs and the damp smell of unheated houses.
Boldly expanding a futuristic and strikingly original musical language Gajek creates a beautiful and deeply moving work of great sincerity and emotional immediacy, making a provocative case for pushing what is possible in a world occupied with calculating what is probable.
Matti Gajek considers himself a product of socialist biohacking. Injected with high doses of vitamin D directly after birth, the GDR made sure his bones would be strong even if he never saw the sun.

Lawrence Lek : Sinofuturism (1839-2046 AD) - [screening]
Sinofuturism is a video essay combining elements of science fiction, documentary melodrama, social realism, and Chinese cosmologies, in order to critique the present-day dilemmas of China and the people of its diaspora.
With reference to Afrofuturism and Gulf Futurism, Sinofuturism presents a critical and playful approach to subverting cultural clichés.
In Western media and Orientalist perceptions, China is exotic, strange, bizarre, kitsch, tacky, or cheap. In its domestic media, China portrayed as heroic, stable, historic, grand, and unified. Rather than counteract these skewed narratives, Sinofuturism proposes to push them much further. By embracing seven key stereotypes of Chinese society (Computing, Copying, Gaming, Studying, Addiction, Labour and Gambling), it shows how China's technological development can be seen as a form of Artificial Intelligence.

OFF LICENSE poses as an audio visual poem and presents as a new collaborative & interdisciplinary work by Juliana Huxtable, Ziúr and Theresa Baumgartner.

Premiere: October 1st and 2nd
Doors: 19:30h | Performance: 20:30h (duration - approx. 45 min)

Using the structures of music as mediums in her multi-media universe, Juliana Huxtable is a DJ and musician singular in her approach. Where her visual art and poetry navigate the complexification of desire in a life increasingly mediated by technology, her music utilizes the sounds of technology itself to construct parallel realities to be inhabited and embodied in rhythm and harmonic tableaux. Her sets skillfully deploy the notion of sampling, and re-blogging as DJ strategies, ecstatically mixing an array of influences that frolic at the boundary of genre-intuition and experimentation. At once an assertion of freedom and an ode to the evolutionary structure of electronic music subcultures, she aspires to the sublime in what can often only be described as witchcraft behind the decks; seance from the stage.

Ziúr is an experimental producer/musician and a fixture in Berlin's rich musical topography. It seems as though she produces her releases in the way someone scoring a television series does, gathering and arranging their selections for each episode ... isolating and apprehending definitive scenes and memorializing their ethos in song. Soundtracks, much like her release “ATØ”, guide the listener through radically different emotional states, yet somehow still offer an idea of what underpins a show's (or in this case an album's) particular hues. Ziúr produces music within such a scope, expansive, rich and diverse in texture. The sounds are simultaneously machinistic and deeply anthropomorphic, toying with mechanical isolation and the chaotic spectrum of human emotion. Unlike a soundtrack or score, there is no film to which one can turn to narrativize the music ... there is only evocative sounds reaching from each song towards the cybernetic sublime.

Theresa Baumgartner is a visual artist based in Berlin. With her work, she is blurring the lines between AV performance and installation art using experimental filming techniques for her visuals and an approach to stage design that is rooted in fine art and sculpture. Her latest project is a collaboration with Hildur Gudnadottir on her Emmy and Golden Globe awarded score for the HBO series Chernobyl accompanied by Chris Watson, Sam Slater and Francesco Donadello. She has shown her work at renowned institutions such as The Barbican Centre London, MONA (Museum Of Old And New Art in Hobart, Tasmania), HKW Berlin, La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris, Muziekgebouw Amsterdam and highly acclaimed festivals like Unsound, CTM, Sydney Festival and Primavera. Baumgartner is the co-founder of Bestfilmsforever/BFF, a video and media arts collective with an emphasis on supporting females in tech.

All guests attending this limited event are required to wear masks at all times. House rules put in place to regulate the potential spread of COVID-19 need to be respected and followed. FIRST AND LAST MEN | Jóhann Jóhannsson

We are excited to present a rare screening of Last and First Men (2020) by late director and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Two billion years ahead of us, a future race of humans finds itself on the verge of extinction. Almost all that is left in the world are lone and surreal monuments, beaming their message into the wilderness.
Last and First Men is a 70 minutes film-essay inspired by the 1930 novel of the same name by British SF author William Olaf Stapledon. Narrated by Tilda Swinton the film is a mixture of brutalist architecture imagery and the original score by Johann Johannson alongside sound artist and composer Yair Elazar Glotman.

Jóhann Jóhannsson (1969–2018) was a prolific composer, who wrote music for a wide array of media including theatre, dance, television and films. His work is stylised by its blending of classical instrumentation with electronic elements.
A great deal of Jóhannsson’s work in his last years had been closely entwined with 7ilm: in 2010 he paired up with American avant-garde filmmaker Bill Morrison on the critically acclaimed The Miners’ Hymns. He has also scored a number of major cinematic hits, including Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners (2013), Sicario (2015), the score of which was nominated for all major awards, and Arrival (2016), which earned him Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. His other notable film credits include James Marsh’s Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything (2014), for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

I'M IN LOVE WITH A GHOST | Christian Thomsen (FJORSK)

Some kind of spirit lures into the forest. Lures into the sea. Sings songs. Charms and enchants. Gates open, fires blaze. Embers smoulder, bodies burn, desire. Fjorsk’s expressions haunt a longing for a kindred spirit, through painting, sculptures and steelworks. Playfulness underlies a steady darkness, diffusion leads to clarity on the artist’s quest for a soul in the mist.

Magic Island + JSR Company: ENCAJE FOR TEN

Over two nights in July we will present a unique outdoor event that bridges two Berlin-based female forces of their respective artistic fields: the iconic singer-songwriter Emma Czerny, aka Magic Island, together with Cuban choreographer Judith Sánchez Ruíz and her JSR Company.

visuals by Claire Hovine

In an intimate concert, Magic Island will be filling the hot summer air with her ethereal soundscapes, driven by assertive beats and topped with her inimitably graceful voice. And just before dusk, we will be witnessing, after several years in-the-making, the world premiere of JSR Company’s dance piece ENCAJE FOR TEN - a truthful work of empowerment with a cast of ten female dancers interlaced in a complex multi-layered composition.
Dates: 24th & 25th of July, doors open at 19:00
Due to limited capacity we kindly advise you to book your tickets in advance [see ticket link]

»It’s a dirty, reduced piece of pumping R&B but on top of it the singer’s voice adds an odd and honest twist to the entire track. She makes it work and really transports that emotion of getting overwhelmed by the unfair system in which we all operate in.« - NBHAP
Having been described as ‘honest pop’, Magic Island’s soundscape is permeated by haunting and unforgettable flavors. With her Berlin-based solo project, the artist weaves together powerful compositions with tangles and twists of her signature weirdness. Magic Island sculpts loops and hooks pulling freely from R&B, experimental pop, soul and mainstream sounds. On her multiple tours across Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East, Magic Island tells the story of a jaded soul and an innocent heart; her incessantly addictive tracks embrace the profoundness, the tragedy and the magic of the world. The enchanting lyrics in songs like ‘Warm Heaven’ belie the desperate feminine rage that is compressed into her melodies. Her world is a fluid place for contradictions – Magic Island’s hymns speak of softness and strength with a conviction that the two are not exclusive from each other.
This concert is supported by Neustart Kultur - Initiative Musik

Taking point of departure in her well-toured improvisation-based solo ENCAJE, Judith Sánchez Ruíz is now ready to blow up her own creation by projecting her explosive and ever-changing energy out on ten dancers. All women. All under the same powerful spell of constant unpredictability.
The piece was originally inspired by the French-Cuban-American feminist writer Anaïs Nin and her prolific diaries (spanning from 1931-74), which have given account to a woman’s deeply explorative voyage of self-discovery. Build on her own personal archive of dance journals, Sánchez Ruíz revives Nin’s legacy by flipping through her pages on different expressions, emotions, and everyday material. This results in a jump-cut effect in the movement language, yet a certain intimacy is preserved. One phrase is interrupted by the other - like constantly turning the knob on an old radio, jumping from one station to the next. Each dancer carries herself as a strong individual with both her signature and lifeline to disclose. The lines and layers in the composition become almost labyrinthine, but the ten bodies are nevertheless unified - by the disorder and by the vulnerability.

Judith Sánchez Ruíz began her dance studies at the age of 11 at the National School of Arts in Havana, Cuba. In 1999 she moved to New York where she founded the JSR Company in 2010. The year after she relocated to Berlin. She has been awarded grants by The Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The American Music Center’s Live Music for Dance program as well as the Baryshnikov Arts Center, and Martha Duffy Resident Artist Spring. Her works have been presented in numerous international festivals and have been commissioned at Danspace Project St. Marks Church, Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum, Storm King Art Center, and Trauma Bar und Kino.
JSR Company is experimenting with a form of choreography that relies on layers and subjects switching in volatile ramifications of improvisation. A new way to envision choreography.

4:4:1 is the outcome of a four week intensive residency, four soli in one performance programme.

During an intensive residency of 4 weeks, the choreographers are being invited to explore the thematic of “impossible repetitions”. Exploring repetition through movement, gesture or structure means engaging with its impossibility. The pleasure that derives from it has something to do with its impossible ending, but also with a becoming undone through it, with a process of learning, re-learning and unlearning how to be who we are, beyond what we already know…

4:4:1 is probing various approach of performance by offering a embodied experience which lays toward aesthetic movement research. It takes the shorter towards a new way of experience performance, where physicality is explored and presented collectively.

Trauma Bar und Kino is pleased to present the opening to Vermillion, a solo exhibition by Croatian-born Berlin-based Tea Stražičić.

Poster design by Nick Zhu

Trauma Bar und Kino is pleased to present Vermillion, a solo exhibition by the Croatian-born multimedia-artist Tea Stražičić (b. 1990). The exhibition shows for the first time large-format drawings and paintings by the artist, who has mainly worked in the fields of video art and animation until now. The individual works reinterpret the story Vermillion, which Stražičić co-authored with Nicholas Zhu, as an oversized graphic novel in exhibition format. In the story, the “horsemen of the apocalypse,” a chaotic group of friends on their way to a doomsday party, set out on a journey to deliver “Behemot” to an “Anti-Diluvian Club.” The characters are striking skeletal creatures who behave like vampires, while their appearances change as they travel through a surreal landscape of apps, add-ons, and architecture. Over the course of their journey, they gradually lose their sense of self as well as their need for self-determination and individuality. They come to understand individuality as a trap that humans have created for themselves, one that prevents real communication. Stražičić thus touches on broader themes such as individuality and individual self-determination.
In addition to large-format drawings, paintings, and objects, the exhibition is also supplemented by an animated film from Ana Sagadin. Furthermore, the narrative of Vermillion is also presented in a calligraphic book-object, made by Jean-Baptiste Normand specifically for the exhibition.
Curated by Madalina Stanescu.

This Iranian 4-piece band bring their Oriental Funeral Doom to Trauma.
The band's first concert on July 8th, 1999 was disrupted by Iranian Secret Police, with some members being arrested. In their earlier incarnation, the band was a black metal band, with their style changing as they reformed in 2016. Some of the instrumentation includes cello strings on electric bass through a guitar amp as well as a traditional Oriental string instrument, Sarangi.

A multi-instrumentalist, Olin Caprison composes, produces, and performs for all of VIOLENCE's output. Their compositions are known for dissecting genres and dismantling historical hierarchies; not only through orchestration but also through lyrical content which merges personal narratives with meditations on the oppressive nature of history, the idea of genetic memory, the stigmas that would result from such an idea, and compassion.

Eartheater distills experimental digital production, a three-octave vocal range, and classical composition into works suspended between obsessively detailed sonic tapestries and almost recklessly romantic and gestural electronica. A body of viscerally emotive live performance stands with her recorded output, realised by her fearless physical investment and gut-wrenching vocal sincerity. She will perform alongside Patric Belaga.

Lisbon based Odete works between writing, music, performance and visual arts - her work is explicitly autobiographic, making clear the border between the personal and politics. She describes her music as a sensorial theory for a weary girlhood - a ghost warrior that becomes visible through mixing.

Yantan Ministry is an experimental composer, live musician and DJ. Recognisable by their mercuriality and eclectic movements, their work permeates a keen interest in ambiguity, obfuscation and the emotional body; an ever present suggestion of their inclinations being motivated by stepping outside the frame to highlight a riddle, to create feelingly and work within mythical space.
They self-released their edits pack Attacco Mixtape in 2018, followed by the interpretative piece Raw Red Redux on Swedish label Country Music. Their debut EP, Radio Unnameable, was released in 2020 on Berlin based experimental label Yegorka, followed by Flagrant Hours in 2021 on the same, with duo Kittisol.

oxhy is a musician from London: “no two things alike. every comparison is awkwardly rough”.

An essential component in the steady ascension of the Croatian collective low income $quad over the last couple of years, Strahinja has established himself as a prime mover for the whole local scene, stacking up releases on labels small and big, from PUPPY Tapes to BANK Records NYC and Natural Sciences, via London's Bliq and the multi-faceted Clan Destine Records to Planetaria, with a track coming out soon on REPITCH Recordings. His music is a mixture of noise, techno and industrial where Memphis rap samples can sit on top of pounding hardcore and breakneck speed-techno loops. He’s currently a monthly resident on NTS Radio and, since a year ago, runs a new label called Optimism Is Out To Get You, focused entirely on new takes and variations of 90s-inspired techno and trance.

His 2019 calendar included gigs at CTM, Sónar, and Dekmantel, along with a string of dates across China and Japan. J.G. Biberkopf [live]
J. G. Biberkopf’s music spans club, theatre and digital radio contexts. His debut first EP, titled Ecologies, launched the new Knives label created by Kuedo and Joe Shakespeare of Berlin’s Motto Books. From cyber ambience and slamming rhythmic constructions, to instant trails of web-filtered grime and beatless studies of net phenomenology, Biberkopf’s first release was intended as a field trip into the representations of nature that emerge from the social media scape. The resulting experience is oddly romantic, stripped of its tangibility yet with a synthetic vitality. In his own words, Biberkopf was intrigued by an oddly “naïve idea of nature that seemed strikingly prevalent in my social environment. I was curious to know how these simulations of Nature work in digital media, how do we do experience these simulated materials”. A follow-up recording, the full-lenght Ecologies II: Ecosystems Of Excess, was released in 2016.

Co-creator of Infinite Quest, Auco is known for their obsessive exploration into the craft of DJing
Their signature style combines daring and complex blends with a gritty sound palette, which originally encompassed new gen and deconstructed club tracks, but has since grown to incorporate newly-evolved genres as Gqom, Jersey club, as well as old-school Jungle, Garage, and Ragga. Protean as ever, their selection pays tribute to their South London roots while also activating a nexus between the robust histories and global milieus of underground clubbing culture.

Primer invites a shift in perspective. Where hybrid nomads evolve within islands of contemporary meaning and wonder, creating a fabulous surface inscribed by sensorial dreams and divinities. A newly formulated space for human encounter that may never occur, yet bearing the potential of a new unrestrained sphere of compassion and empathy, where diversity is a condition of truth.

CROSSLUCID is an interdisciplinary collective and the synthesis of Sylwana Zybura and Tomas C. Toth. Appearing in a transitional reality its aim is to instigate new associations and investigate the possibility of novel arrangements. Its current practice spans video, photography, collage, installation, character design and creative direction.
CROSSLUCID accelerates the intersection between realities with their combinations of multifaceted visual systems and performative practices.

Don Aretino is a menswear designer, whose work consistently references the interconnection between religion, same-sex desire, and social analysis. He creates these narratives through bold collections that are intended to discomfort and creating a counter argument to an existing norm.
